Needham, MA - SolarOne Solutions was chosen for the installation of 41 solar-powered outdoor light poles by the city of Parkland Florida for a municipal park and adjacent parking facility. SolarOne Solutions is the world`s leading provider of solar powered LED outdoor area lighting.

 

According to Jim Berkman, Director of Public Works and Engineering for Parkland, “We went through a lot of companies before we found one that could not only provide a product that is solar-powered but also aesthetically pleasing.” Berkman went on to explain that only SolarOne Solutions met the wind loading codes required in south Florida to withstand the hurricane storm level. 

Each light pole offers 3,000 solar-powered lumens of extremely efficient LED lighting. The project’s lighting characteristics exceed IES lighting guidelines for parking lots, particularly for lighting uniformity – a critical component for good visual acuity. The lights provide a clean white light with a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of .>80; much greater than the sodium lights common to many parking lots across the US. These characteristic play an important role in everything from finding one’s car to increasing security in a parking lot.

The SolarOne fixtures installed in the Parkland parking lot were its popular Shoebox design. The systems provide dusk-to-dawn lighting with dual light levels for peak and off-peak activity in the park. System performance is controlled by SolarOne’s patent-pending SO-Bright® Technology for extremely reliable operation for years to come.

The city of Parkland hired the PLA Electrical Contracting firm of Florida to install the light poles. According to Pat Cristiano, President of PLA, “There’s a big saving because there is no circuit wires that have to run from pole to pole to feed them back to wherever the power source is coming from. Everything is pretty much contained right in its own light pole.” Public Works Director Berkman hopes the installation of the SolarOne solar powered fixtures in the parking lot will “pave the way for other cities” to follow their green lead.
