Keeping the Lights on in Masdar City: A SolarOne Case Study
January 11, 2018
Perhaps one of the most famous “green cities”, Masdar City shares a long partnership with SolarOne. Located next to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the U.A.E., Masdar City is a unique environmental challenge for solar lighting systems. While the Middle Eastern city receives significant sun, there are a few environmental hurdles that SolarOne had to overcome: heat and sand.
Completed in 2009, SolarOne worked with the City of Masdar in their effort to create the fist zero-carbon city. Working alongside the locally-based Gargash Lighting Systems (GLS), SolarOne provided lighting for the roadway and site offices in Masdar City. While Masdar City considered multiple other solar lighting options, SolarOne won out in the end due to its SO-Bright technology and ability to withstand the severe sandstorms of the Middle East.
With such a fast pace of development, installation time was critical for the success of Masdar City. Unlike conventional lighting, SolarOne systems become operational the moment that they are put into place. The site office area was illuminated within a week of unpacking the equipment and the roadway was illuminated within 3 weeks. The lights are also easily relocated. This has already proven to be an important consideration a fast growing site like Masdar City, where needs evolve quickly and plans are prone to change.
The SolarOne lighting system is most distinguished for its proprietary SO-Bright Technology, which employs maximum power point tracking, temperature compensation and Battery SOC algorithms to manage the fixture’s light output and adapt to low power input conditions such as cloudy days, and even sandstorms. In the United Arab Emirates, sandstorms can reduce sunlight and visibility for days at a time and bring the area to a complete standstill.SolarOne's snow/sand coverage protection and Run Time Extension allow the systems to continue to perform normally.
In-ground battery enclosures provide provide better temperature control by using the earth as a natural heat sink.
SolarOne is proud of our partnership with Masdar City and our dedication to implementing sustainable lighting systems around the world.
